The Clean Heat Project
Environment Canterbury's Clean Heat Project provides financial help to homeowners and landlords using open fires or high emission solid fuel burners to change to cleaner home heating.
You are eligible for help if you are
- a homeowner or landlord of a residential home that's located in a Clean Air Zone and
- have an open fire or solid fuel burner installed before 1 January 2004 that is being used (or for Christchurch and Kaiapoi is currently usable) as the main form of heating in the main living area of your home (providing you do not have any other fixed heating appliance such as a heat pump in the same living area).
Make an appointment for a Clean Heat Assessor to assess your home heating and insulation. They will discuss your appliance and finance options, answer your questions and provide you with a detailed quote. The assessment is free.
New Air Rules for Christchurch, Kaiapoi and Ashburton
The use of open fires and solid fuel burners 15 years or older is prohibited:

- In Kaiapoi from 1 May 2010 in the Kaiapoi Clean Air Zone 1 (see map).
- In Ashburton from 1 May 2011 in the Ashburton Clean Air Zone 1 (see map).
